ALY HOMEN, REHEARSAL DIRECTOR
Since the age of three, Aly Grace Homen has been a passionate mover who loves any opportunity to perform. Though she has practiced almost every form of dance throughout her life, her focus was on ballet and contemporary from an early age. Aly danced at various studios in Roseville growing up as well as being involved with the dance program at Granite Bay High School. In 2010 at her final Starbound National Dance Competition, Aly earned the award of Miss Dance Spirit for her friendliness and genuine support of her team and community, as well as placing in the top ten for her contemporary solo. In her later years, she has realized the power of creative movement as a therapeutic tool.
In 2011, she began attending Santa Monica College as a dance major. Her mentors included Charlotte Richards, Sean Greene, Roberta Wolin-Tupas and Jae Young Lee. Aly also worked closely with choreographers such as Cati Jean, Holly Johnston, Seda Aybay and Joelle Martinec during her time performing with Santa Monica College’s performance company Synapse Contemporary Dance Theater.
Upon returning to northern California, she began her teaching career at Hawkins School of Performing Arts as well as KM Dance Arts. Aly also became a founding member of Sacramento Contemporary Dance Theatre in 2015 under the artistic director Jacob Gutierrez Montoya. While studying at California State University, Sacramento, she trained regularly with Nolan T’Sani, Philip LeRoy Flickinger, Lorelei Bayne, Nhan Ho and Dr. Linda Goodrich. One of her most profound experiences while studying at CSUS was having the opportunity to perform a solo in a piece from the repertoire of José Limón taught by Gary Masters. She was elected Vice President of Dance Alliance at Sac State for her last two years of attendance, and earned her B.A. in Dance with a minor in Philosophy in 2017.
Two years later, Aly traveled to Thailand to earn her 200 hour Yoga Alliance certification. She has now returned to teaching at Hawkins School of Performing Arts and KM Dance Arts, and currently serves as rehearsal director for Sacramento Contemporary Dance Theatre. Aly loves to incorporate her yogic training into her dance classes with the hope of maintaining the holistic health of her dancers. Her favorite aspect of dancing with SCDT is knowing that the company is using the power of dance to not only impact people emotionally, but to directly improve the community in so many ways.
