KENDRA BARRERA, Assistant Artistic Director
For the past eleven years, Kendra has been a dance educator in the local Sacramento area. She grew up in Roseville, CA and attended many local dance studios training primarily in ballet, jazz, and contemporary. In high school, Kendra was heavily involved in the dance department, which gave her more opportunities to train and furthered her passion for dance. Kendra’s passion for teaching dance was cultivated through the Woodcreek High School dance program. As a member of the dance team and a leader in the dance department, she went on to coach the Woodcreek High School Dance Team for 7 years. She was an instructor at El Dorado Dance Academy for 8 years, directing and choreographing for the Kaleidoscope Touring Company. Furthermore, Kendra performed as a backup dancer for Weird Al Yankovic and has danced and choreographed for the Miss Teenage California Pageant. Additionally, Kendra worked as part of several outreach programs to local elementary schools, introducing young children to dance.
Kendra has trained in Arts Media and Entertainment (AME) education as well as Career and Technical Education (CTE) specializing in the area of dance. She also attended the Giordano intensive for teachers, training in several styles with an emphasis on Giordano Jazz technique.
Currently, Kendra is an instructor at Hawkins School of Performing Arts and is the Precision Coach for the Hawkins Contemporary Jazz Company. She is proud to be an inaugural dancer of the Sacramento Contemporary Dance Theatre professional company and is now the Assistant Artistic Director. Kendra is also a secondary education teacher, teaching both Dance and English at Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts. There, she serves as the Arts Director and not only choreographs and organizes the dance shows, but also choreographs for their annual musicals. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English, and a Single Subject Teaching Credential in English and Dance from Sacramento State University. Kendra is appreciative of her many opportunities to share her knowledge and love for dance with students throughout the region.
